Lacing Cards

LACING CARDS (From 2.5 - 3 years. Can be supplied with every 2nd hole punched for younger children)

Lacing activities not only work on fine motor skills, but on hand eye coordination, visual perception and visual discrimination skills too. All these

skills are needed for reading and writing, so the earlier children develop these, the better.

Each set consists of 4 laminated lacing cards and 4 coloured laces.

COUNTING CARDS (From 2 - 5 years)

This pack of counting cards can be used to introduce your little one to some of the basic fundamentals of Maths. They will develop number recognition and counting skills for numbers 1 - 10. As they begin to master this, parents can challenge their preschoolers to order the numbers from
1 - 10. The counting cards can further be used to promote the concept of more and less during these early years of their development. The use of small counters will also improve their pincer grasp, this is an important fine motor skill that is key to developing appropriate pencil grip in their later years.

Each set consists of 10 laminated cards and 10 coloured counters.

MAGNETIC STORY BOARDS (From 4 years)

This magnetic board allows your preschooler to use their imagination while they build up their visual perception skills by learning to manipulate each component to create wonderful stories. Parents can work on extending their little one’s vocabulary by discussing their story creations.Allowing your child to sit in front of the fridge for this activity will help in building up their core muscles as well as shoulder strength, both skills are important for later writing activities.

Each set consists of a laminated background and multiple cutouts with magnets, making it easy to use on a magnetic board, fridge or baking sheet.

SHAPE MATCHING PUZZLE (From 3 years)

This fun and colourful shape matching puzzle promotes shape recognition while enhancing your child’s fine motor skills. As your preschooler handles small pieces they strengthen their finger muscles and learn to manipulate the shapes to fit each space perfectly. Visual perception is important for learning to read and write in later years which makes puzzle building a great pre-writing and early literacy activity.

Each set consists of a laminated background and multiple shape cutouts with velcro.

FRUIT JAR SHAPE MATCHING (From 1 years)

This fun and colourful shape matching activity promotes shape recognition while enhancing your child’s fine motor skills. As your little one handles small pieces they strengthen their finger muscles and learn to manipulate the shapes to fit each space perfectly. By discussing the different shapes, colours and fruit you are building on your child’s vocabulary.

Each set consists of a laminated background and multiple shape cutouts with velcro.

COLOUR WHEEL (From 2 years)

This colour wheel activity is ideal for developing concentration and colour recognition in little ones. The use of pegs will also improve their pincer grasp, this is an important fine motor skill that is key to developing appropriate pencil grip in their later years. A nice add-on for parents to challenge their preschoolers would be to place the pegs on their child’s non-dominant side and encourage them to cross over their bodies to retrieve the pegs. Crossing the midline is an important skill for preschoolers to master as when doing so they are using both sides of their brain to co-ordinate smooth and controlled movements. The ability to cross over their bodies is important for daily tasks such as reading, writing and tying shoelaces.

Each set consists of a laminated colour wheel and 6 matching coloured pegs.

OWL COLOUR MATCHING (From 1 year)

This bright colour matching activity promotes colour recognition while enhancing your child’s fine motor skills and hand eye coordingation. By naming the colours with your little one you are building on their vocabulary.

Each set consists of a laminated background and 6 coloured owl cutouts with velcro.

SEQUENCING CARDS - BEGINNER (From 4 years)

This activity reinforces basic colour recognition as well as developing fundamental sequencing skills in their early years. The use of sticks and the particular placement of each improves the preschooler’s hand eye coordination. This is the ability of the body to co-ordinate hand movements.

Each set consists of 8 laminated pattern cards and 12 coloured ice-cream sticks.

SEQUENCING CARDS - ADVANCED (From 4 years)

This advanced set of sequencing cards reinforce basic colour recognition as well as developing fundamental sequencing skills in their early years. The use of sticks and the particular placement of each improves the preschooler’s hand eye coordination. This is the ability of the body to co-ordinate hand movements. It is important for young learners to carefully work through the order placement of each stick to ensure correct sequence is achieved.

Each set consists of 8 laminated pattern cards and 12 coloured ice-cream sticks.

BEEHIVE SEQUENCING - BEGINNER (From 4 years)

This activity reinforces basic colour recognition as well as developing fundamental sequencing skills in their early years. The use of cut outs and the particular placement of each improves the preschooler’s hand eye coordination. This is the ability of the body to co-ordinate hand movements.

Each set consists of a laminated background with 12 pattern cards and 14 hexagon cut-outs.

BEEHIVE SEQUENCING - ADVANCED (From 6 years)

This advanced version of the original activity allows children of varying ages as well as academic capabilities to equally enjoy this brightly colored activity. While the focus remains the same, to reinforce colour recognition as well as sequencing skills, learners are now challenged to use their growing bank of sight words to complete the necessary sequence.

Parents are encouraged to work with their children as they enter into this more challenging version of this activity to ensure ultimate success.

Learners are also able to decode colour names by identifying the beginning letter of each word which may allow them the background knowledge necessary to identify each individual word.

Each set consists of a laminated background with 12 colour name pattern cards and 14 hexagon cut-outs.

ANIMAL MATCHING PUZZLE (From 1 year)

Playing with puzzles teaches children problem solving and helps with fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Jigsaw puzzles also help with children’s visual perception skills, which are necessary in maths and writing.

Each set consists of a laminated background and 6 puzzle pieces with velcro.

CVC WORDS BOARD GAME (From 6 years)

This CVC board game has been designed to practice and reinforce CVC words. These are words that follow the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern and are considered the simplest, most important words and the starting point of the early phonics program.

Teaching CVC words introduces students to the magic of transforming simple sounds into words and is an integral part of any pre-reading program.
The goal is for students to use their knowledge of individual letter sounds to blend those sounds together and create a whole word, not just three individual sounds.

The CVC board game can be used to review and master CVC vocabulary and spelling as well as teaching other word skills such as ‘begins with’ and ‘ends in’ etc.

Have learners in class or your children at home take turns rolling a die and moving around the board, as they land on a word they read it out loud for the group to hear. if they get it right, they stay there, if not, they go back to where they were and play moves on.

In the beginning it is always encouraged that learners spell each word out loud as this helps them blend the sounds eg. w-e-t, wet.

Each set consists of an A3 laminated game, 1 dice and 6 counters.

NUMBER BONDS : 1 - 10 (From 5 years)

A number bond is a simple addition sum which has become so familiar to a child that they can recognise it and instantly tell the answer without the need for the actual calculation. Knowing their number bonds fluently up to ten is one of the foundations needed to ease into more complex arithmetic later in schooling.

Number bonds help learners see that numbers can be “broken” into pieces to make calculations easier (decomposing/composing). With this number bond activity, the learners are able to experiment with relationships between numbers in a less threatening manner. They are able to work through a variety of combinations of nuts and acorns to ultimately find the bonds of 10. Learners must be exposed to the correct mathematical language during these activities.

Parents can extend these activities in a variety of ways, depending on the academic level of their child. The nuts and acorns can be used to experiment with odd and even numbers, Odd Todd and Even Steven is a lovely addition to this extension. As they become more confident with the bonds, they can make use of only the nuts or the acorns and then find the missing number independently of the visual aids.

Each set consists of an A4 laminated background with 10 base number cut outs (1-10), number cut outs (0-10), 10 acorn counters  and 10 nut counters.

NUMBER BONDS : 11 - 20 (From 5 years)

A number bond is a simple addition sum which has become so familiar to a child that they can recognise it and instantly tell the answer without the need for the actual calculation. Knowing their number bonds fluently up to ten is one of the foundations needed to ease into more complex arithmetic later in schooling.

Number bonds help learners see that numbers can be “broken” into pieces to make calculations easier (decomposing/composing). Once a child has mastered the bonds up to ten they can then move on to bonds from eleven to twenty. With this number bond activity, the learners are able to experiment with relationships between numbers in a less threatening manner. They are able to work through a variety of combinations of nuts and acorns to ultimately find the bonds of 11 to 20. The children are also encouraged to write the numbers with an easy-erase white board marker thus building on their writing skills.

Each set consists of an A4 laminated background with 10 base number cut outs (11-20), 20 acorn counters, 20 nut counters and a white board marker pen.

This activity has been specially designed to improve the child’s knowledge of colours. Your child is required to match each picture with the colour patches it is made up of, by doing this they are enhancing their observation skills. They are also actively engaged in learning the colour names and improving their problem solving skills.

Parents are able to extend this activity as their children improve their skills by incorporating the cards into a Memory Game. The picture cards and colour patches will be placed face down on a surface, players will take turns to turn over one picture card and one of the cards representing the colour patches. This challenges the players to  quickly identify the colours on each card, keeping them only if they match. The player with  the most matching sets is the winner.
